After combing through the wreckage, Regina Fire and Protective Services have determined natural gas caused the explosion that levelled a house on Sunday.

“Fire investigators located a gas line within the property that had been ‘compromised’ and determined this explosion was related to natural gas,” the fire department said in a statement Monday afternoon. “An ignition source could not be located due to the extent of the damage.”

Compromised how? In a building that that be empty & boarded up for a year? Hmmm

The Regina Police Service (RPS) is asking the public for information or video that could assist in the investigation into a building explosion in the north central area on Nov. 13.

Around 10:40 a.m., police were called to the area of 6th Avenue and Retallack Street for a report of a building explosion at 1202 Retallack St.

Officers blocked off traffic and began to investigate whether the explosion was criminal.
Through investigation, police determined a gas line in the building had been compromised on Nov. 13 sometime between the hours of 5 a.m. and 7 a.m., according to a release from RPS.
Det. Cst. Mark Oliver said police were able to determine the time frame based on the build up of gas pressure. However, he could not say how the gas line was compromised or if it was intentional as the matter is still under investigation.

Although the explosion itself was accidental, RPS said the compromise of the gas line is a criminal act and officers are looking to find out who is responsible for that.

“We can’t really say what the charge is going to be,” Oliver said.

“We know that the property was vacant so anybody in there constitutes as a break and enter. We know that the line was compromised so that constitutes as mischief.”

RPS are asking anyone in the area who may have seen suspicious activity or have stored video in a surveillance system to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

“We know that many cameras were destroyed because of the event and most of that (video) is stored in the cloud or on a hard drive, so we’re looking for some evidence that may come forward of any suspicious activity,” Oliver said.

According to police, no serious injuries were reported due to the explosion.

So weirdly, Lisa calls me at work this morning shortly before the lunch hour to tell me that the CBC is here at home (?) and she needs me to come home early?

The only clue she gave me is that it pertain to the burnt house above, and the landlord of that property, so I come home and give some details to the reporter and cameraman, and ended up doing a quick interview that supposedly will be on the CBC tomorrow, noon or suppertime.

Personally, I haven’t watched TV in about a decade (Netflix or YouTube, maybe CNN during hurricanes, but that’s about it).

I guess the derelict landlord/owner complained to the media about people dumping garbage into her abandoned property that she doesn’t mow or shovel or care for in any way whatsoever…& she wanted to complain about the city telling her that she needed to clean up her own property.

“How dare they ask her to accept responsibility for her own property that she doesn’t accept responsibility for!!” Etc…

This transpired before I got home, but apparently she had a bit of a freak out, session, victim role, went and hid in her car and came back out repeatedly during her interview…. Total bizarre strangeness that I hope they put on the news tomorrow because I’d love to watch it.

Anyway, the reporter was a Louise Bigeagle, and hopefully this ends up online somewhere so I might actually get to see it and laugh at the sheer crazy antics of this negligent property owner. This is the reporter & the cameraman.

Just found the print version of the story above. It’s a bit sympathetic towards the derelict absentee landlord, but it is what it is:
I hope on the video version they show this landlord running away from the interview and locking herself in her car, then coming back and then running away and then coming back and then running away repeatedly…. Because I missed all of that when I was working, & that would be the entertaining portion of the story.

She doesn't know exactly when the trailer showed up on the lot. It has a licence plate on it, and Thomas-Cameron said she's reached out to both the City of Regina and police to see if anything can be done to the person who dumped it there.

We can say that the trailer showed up last fall before it snowed, and it’s May of the following year at this point. That means she didn’t show up with respect to her property for at least half a year this time around and only because she had to.

"For those that live here, it's frustrating," said Ron Rider, who said he's lived in the neighbourhood for 15 years.

He called the Regina Fire Department when the fire started in the house on Thomas-Cameron's property, before it was knocked down. Before that, as many as 18 people were living in the house and six more in its garage at one point, he said. After it was torn down, the lot was covered with tall weeds.

Derelict homes and lots are essentially an invitation for squatters to take over, making the area unsafe for nearby homeowners and leading to crime like property theft, he said.

"If you mowed it, if you maintained it, people avoided it. They wouldn't even walk on the grass when it was short. They avoid things that are maintained," he said.

Rider thinks the city is moving in the right direction with respect to the bylaw enforcement it's doing, like boarding up vacant properties, but more needs to be done.

"We do have the infrastructure in place to police this, but … there has to be some teeth with respect to this, so that property owners do maintain their properties," he said.

"They may not live in this neighbourhood, but we do."

Or mow the lawns, shovel the sidewalks, paint the houses, rent them out, reduce the housing shortage, get to know your neighbours, know who does or doesn’t belong…who’s visiting whom, who’s there in your neighbourhood or on your block who shouldn’t be, make a presence, take things back, etc…

Reduce the crime, reducing insurance rates, know at least your immediate neighbours on a first name basis, watch out for each other, mow the lawns of those not able to do that for themselves, create a sense of pride for yourself and those around you, etc…

If there is a disturbance, hit your front steps with your other neighbours, let those creating the disturbance know that there are many witnesses who give a damn. Don’t hide. Power in numbers.

Not that simple anymore. First, all asbestos as to be removed. $10-15 grand a house. The trucking company that hauls it away must be licensed for asbestos hauling, just to add to the cost. Disposal depends on largely where you are. In our area, wood and metal must be separated and sent to their respective disposal places. Concrete and asphalt go to their own recycling place. Extra $12 charge for every toilet at the dump. Permits required at every step to ensure people whose only real job skill is welfare recipient make good wages and get a solid gold pension.
The really bizarre part is the asbestos disposal. All asbestos contaminate products have to be bagged and taken to the dump. Mostly you have to make an appointment to dump asbestos, and the price is high. After all this, the dump people run a compactor over the bagged asbestos products to ensure all the bags are ripped open, and pound it in with all the other garbage.
If you have anything with creosote, it has its own rules and only certain places can accept it.

Regina has seen a massive uptick in the number of arsons reported to police in the last 10 years.

In 2023 there were 433 arsons reported in the city, a 673 per cent increase from the 56 reported in 2014.

These numbers were part of a crime statistics report tabled at Tuesday's meeting of the city's Board of Police Commissioners.

"While the primary factor behind this increase appears to be a surge in online reporting, concerns remain regarding vacant and abandoned buildings used for shelter and bin fires," the report says.
